The Mfantsipim Senior High School (SHS) has officially launched activities marking the 150th anniversary of the educational institution, celebrating a legacy of excellence, leadership, and national impact built over a century and a half.
The milestone event took place on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the World Trade Centre, where the school unveiled its commemorative anniversary cloth and official songs as part of activities lined up for the sesquicentennial celebrations.
The commemorative cloth designs come in two variations.
One of which has been produced in two colours, black and red, each symbolising key elements of Mfantsipim’s identity and heritage.
The second design in white reflects the school’s gratitude to God Almighty for bringing them this far.
Speaking at the programme, Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, Captain John B. Yamoah, lauded the impact of the school on society and Ghana’s development.
He pointed out that the cloth and song are not merely ceremonial elements but an enduring creative expression of identity and legacy.
“In a Ghanaian tradition, cloth and music transcend aesthetics. They serve as repositories of history, carriers of values and instruments of collective memory. Through their designs, colours, rhythms, and lyrics, they tell stories, preserve heritage and unify communities across generations. In this context, the anniversary cloth becomes a visual representation of fancy things, journeys and traditions, supported by alumni, students and stakeholders; it will bind together the past and the present in a shared expression of pride and brotherhood,” he noted.

He believes “a lasting cultural imprint will continue to inspire long after the celebration”.
“Together, these creative symbols transform the sesquicentennial into a living legacy, one that honours 150 years and reflects on the broader story of secondary education in Ghana and its role in shaping generations of leaders.”
The musical component of this milestone comprises two distinct pieces: the choral, which will serve as the official anniversary anthem, and the Jama song, which reflects the vibrant spirit and traditions of togetherness.
Captain Yamoah stated that these elements embody the values of unity, discipline and brotherhood that define the Mfantsipim experience and will stand as enduring symbols of the historic celebration as they mark this milestone.

Founded in 1876, Mfantsipim is widely regarded as the pioneer of secondary education in Ghana. Over the years, the institution has built a reputation for shaping leaders, instilling discipline, and nurturing generations of young men committed to national service.
From its classrooms in Cape Coast have emerged influential figures who have contributed significantly to Ghana’s development and made an impact globally, reinforcing the school’s enduring legacy.

The 150th anniversary celebration is themed around brotherhood, leadership, and service, reflecting the core values that have defined the institution since its establishment.
Friday’s event also served as a fundraising platform, with old students and stakeholders encouraged to give back to support the continued development of the school.
“We invite all present and indeed all who are part of the Mfantsipim story to join us in making this sesquicentennial celebration not only memorable but transformative. We encourage you all to support financially in our collective bid to improve the school’s iconic infrastructure, which is in a state of disrepair,” Captain Yamoah appealed.
The anniversary will not only celebrate the past but also chart a path for the future, as Mfantsipim continues its mission of building character and inspiring generations.
Mfantsipim’s 150th anniversary is partnered by KGL, Multimedia Ghana Limited and Margins Group, with stakeholder support from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA).
