The Member of Parliament for Garu Constituency, Dr Thomas Anaba, has raised concerns over a sharp increase in pneumonia cases in the area, attributing the situation to excessive dust from incomplete road projects.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, March 22, Dr Anaba revealed that pneumonia cases along the township road have surged by about 40 per cent, particularly affecting residents living close to the roadside.
“The dusty nature of the road is creating significant health risks for the people of Garu, especially those whose homes are along the roadside,” he said.
He explained that work on the road had stalled due to delays in payments to the contractor, which contributed to the worsening conditions.
“The contractor indicated that since work began, no payment had been made, making it difficult to continue the project,” he added.
Dr Anaba, however, disclosed that following his intervention, steps have been taken to resolve the issue. He noted that the relevant Ministry has assured the contractor of payment, leading to the resumption of work.
“I engaged the Minister, and fortunately, the contractor has now been assured of payment and has returned to site,” he stated.
Despite this development, residents of the Garu District continue to call for the swift completion of the long-delayed road projects. They stress that the persistent dust is not only a serious health concern but is also disrupting economic activities and daily life.
Residents are therefore urging government to take urgent action to improve the road network and alleviate the burden on commuters and businesses in the district.
