The National Communications Authority has announced new measures to strengthen the SIM re-registration process, including the introduction of one-time password (OTP) verification to confirm user consent.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation and the NCA to roll out another nationwide SIM registration exercise aimed at tackling fraud and identity misuse.
Under the new system, individuals will be required to authorise the registration of any additional SIM cards linked to their identification details through an OTP sent directly to them.
This is expected to prevent the unauthorised use of personal information, which has been a major concern in previous exercises.
Authorities say the move will enhance transparency and accountability by ensuring that all registrations are explicitly approved by the rightful owners of identification documents.
It will also help address cases where SIM cards linked to unsuspecting individuals are used for criminal activities.
The NCA has further advised the public to remain vigilant and protect their personal data, particularly as preparations intensify for the upcoming registration exercise.
Speaking on TV3 Ghana on Sunday, March 22, 2026, the Director-General of the NCA, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, cautioned against allowing others to use one’s identification documents for SIM registration.
“We are saying that you should not use your card to register numbers for others because you must give your consent. With the new system, you will receive an OTP, and by using it, you are confirming that you have approved the registration,” he explained.
