The management of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has confirmed the death of a final-year student, Godfred Akomaning, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.
In a press statement dated March 24, the university said the student died on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
According to the statement, a medical report from the hospital identified the cause of death as organophosphate poisoning. Organophosphate poisoning occurs when the human body reacts to chemical compounds commonly found in certain agricultural products and chemical agents.
The body has since been deposited at the Sefwi Anwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.
The management of UENR expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the wider university community over the loss.
It further indicated that investigations would be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a commitment to provide further updates once all facts have been established.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students and staff.
