The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reminded the West African Examinations Council (WEC) that any disruption on the basis of examination and matters of integrity can affect the life and career of a young person.
“That is why we must appreciate that we owe the learners a standard of care and a standard of duty, and give them an environment in which they can give off their best,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu made the remark when the WAEC Council Chairman, Professor Thomas D. Ariyoma, paid a courtesy call on him at the ministry.
The courtesy call is part of an itinerary of the 74th Annual Council Meeting, which opened yesterday (Tuesday) in Accra.
The meeting is rotated among member countries of WAEC – The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, every five years. The last time Ghana hosted the meeting in-person was in 2016.
The 69th Annual Council Meeting hosted by the Government of Ghana in March 2021 was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Iddrisu expressed excitement that President John Dramani Mahama had made it possible for Ghana to realign its calendar to be consistent with our international calendar for
May/June West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), School Candidate.
Artificial intelligence
The minister wondered when artificial intelligence would be used to improve assessment and to elevate integrity as a core value for examination and assessment.
He was hopeful that the members would come out with far-reaching recommendations that would improve the WAEC assessment regime.
Mr Iddrisu pledged that Ghana would honour all its outstanding contributions to the hosting of the Annual Council Meeting.
Gratitude
In response, Prof. Yormah thanked the minister for granting him and the delegation an audience and said, “An important objective of this conference today is to congratulate you on your appointment as the Minister of Education of the Republic of Ghana.
“I believe that your wealth of experience and determination will be more than sufficient to put you firmly in control of the demands and onerous responsibilities of the Office of the Minister,” he said.
Prof. Yormah also thanked the Ministry of Education for its role in his election as the new WAEC Council Chairman, adding, “I have come here today to thank you for the honour done me and the role played by the Ministry of Education of Ghana in my emergence as the Chairman of the Council.”
