The European Union Commission has handed over some military equipment to the National Security Council Secretariat.
The equipment, which included surveillance drones, anti-drone guns and a motorcycle, formed part of the Commission’s #€50 million package delivered to Ghana since 2023.
The event took place at the National Security Council Secretariat in Accra yesterday after Ghana had signed a security and defence partnership with the Commission.
Significance
The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who was present, said the equipment would significantly strengthen Ghana’s ongoing efforts to build the capacity and operational readiness of its security forces.
She said that it would also enhance its ability to respond to emerging threats, as well as support the country’s goal of promoting peace and stability.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged previous donations of military vehicles provided to the Ghana Armed Forces in 2023, and communications and intelligence gathering equipment Ghana received in 2025, and said that while the former improved operational mobility and readiness of the forces, the latter had proven important to the situational awareness and operational coordination in countering emerging threats to national security.
Support
The High Representative and Vice-President of the Commission, Kaja Kallas, who made the presentation, said the donation formed part of efforts by the Commission to equip Ghanaian security personnel to help keep the country safe.
In recent times, there has been unrest in some West African countries, especially the Sahelian regions, where activities of terrorist groups have not only destabilised those countries, but have also led to the killing and maiming of many people.
Appreciation
The National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul-Osman Razak, expressed appreciation to the Commission for their continuous support to the security sector in the country.
He said the donations, coupled with training in the use of the equipment, would go a long way to strengthen and encourage personnel in the discharge of their responsibilities of ensuring the security and safety of all.
