The Chief Executive Officer of Christian Advocacy Africa has praised President John Dramani Mahama for refusing to compromise his values following the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University.
According to him, the president demonstrated strong leadership and patriotism by choosing not to accept the honour after the university reportedly reconsidered its decision over his stance on LGBTQI+ issues.
He noted that President Mahama could have quietly accepted the award along with any attached conditions but instead chose to prioritise the interests of the nation and his personal convictions.
“The President placed the interest of the nation and his beliefs first and did not allow the decision by Lincoln University to discourage him,” he stated.
He added that the move confirms President Mahama’s firm stance on LGBTQI+ matters, which he maintained throughout the 2024 campaign.
Speaking on Adom TV’s The Big Agenda, the CEO acknowledged that accepting the honorary doctorate would have enhanced the president’s profile but said rejecting it under such conditions demonstrates true statesmanship.
“If he had accepted it, it would have added value to his name and work. But for him to ignore that because of the conditions attached, he deserves commendation,” he said.
He further warned that if individual recognitions come with such conditions, it raises concerns about the implications when national leaders seek support from Western countries.
The Christian leader also called on Parliament to fast-track the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, urging that it be passed for the president to assent to it.
Lincoln University in Pennsylvania recently withdrew its planned honorary doctorate for President Mahama and cancelled his visit, just days before the scheduled March 26, 2026, ceremony. The decision followed concerns over Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, often referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
