Thirty mechanised boreholes and 10 hand pumps have been constructed across communities in Affiagya Kwabre South as part of efforts to improve access to potable water and sanitation.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Patricia Pearl Ankrah, disclosed this in an interview with Opemsuo Radio’s Kofi Boakye on Nkwantannanso where she highlighted key interventions aimed at enhancing living conditions in the municipality.
“We have completed 10 hand pumps which have been commissioned and are currently in use. The mechanised boreholes are also largely completed and will soon be commissioned. Additionally, the PURC is supporting us with four more mechanised boreholes,” she stated.
She noted that the Assembly is also intensifying efforts to improve sanitation, including the removal of old refuse dumps and the reclamation of degraded lands.
“I have removed about seven old refuse dumps, and this year we are hoping to clear seven more. At Pekyerensa, we have reclaimed about 20 acres of land that was previously used as a dumpsite,” she said.
Beyond water and sanitation, Hon. Ankrah revealed plans to boost local economic development through industrial initiatives, particularly in agro-processing.
“Very soon, we will come up with a gari factory to process cassava produced in the area. We are also engaging partners, including the Ghana Enterprise Agency, to support this initiative,” she noted.
She added that ongoing quarry activities and plans by SMIDO to establish a factory are expected to position the municipality as an emerging industrial hub, creating jobs and supporting economic growth.
Hon. Ankrah further commended Assembly Members for their contributions to development, emphasising that collective efforts remain key to improving livelihoods across the municipality.
