The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work towards securing a decisive parliamentary majority in the 2028 general election.
“In 2028, we do not need a mighty few but we need a mighty huge majority for Dr Bawumia in Parliament,” he said.
Despite its current minority status in Parliament, he was hopeful that the strength and resilience of the party would see it through victory in 2028.
Addressing some members of the Tertiary Students’ Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament last Wednesday, Mr Afenyo-Markin, urged members of TESCON to serve the party to enable its Flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to win the 2028 presidential election.
He said working hard and staying committed to the party’s cause would help initiate a new transformation under Dr Bawumia, who had been “tried and tested”.
He said he had a strong feeling that the NPP would win the 2028 election.
“The feeling I had in 2015 is the same that I am feeling today; in 2015, I had this feeling that no matter what, we would win the 2016 elections, and we did.
“Unlike the NDC, which has no candidate for 2028, we have Dr Bawumia, who has been tried and tested, and he is a man with solutions,” he said.
Preparations
The Minority Leader said that, given the current state of the economy, TESCON executives and students in general must focus on the 2028 election.
“Let us prepare ourselves because by the grace of God, we have our flag bearer, and we are going through the internal elections.
“By August and September, we will be done and we will have our national, regional, constituency and polling station officers,” he said.
Recalling how the current administration had been selling recruitment forms to about 506,000 applicants for 5,000 vacancies, he told the TESCON executives that “the exercise is for their party executives and members whom they think about”.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, therefore, urged them to affirm their commitment to the NPP so that when they assumed power, they would be remembered.
Recognition
Speaking on behalf of the students’ leadership, the President of TESCON at the Christian Service University, Nana Boakye, commended the Minority leadership for recognising the role students could play in helping the party to win the 2028 election.
He, however, appealed to the party to recognise and aid members of TESCON who encountered problems in the line of performing a duty for the party, saying that “this is the greatest motivation we need”.
