It was a memorable, exciting and merry-making occasion for members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nintin, in the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese as they gathered for the dedication of a newly constructed church on Sunday, 22nd March 2026, during a Mass.
The Mass was presided over by the Bishop of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. John Owusu Sekyere, and supported by the Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Joseph Osei Bonsu. Other Rev. Fathers in attendance were Fr. John Kyereh (Chancellor for Konongo-Mampong), Fr. Stephen Asante Sekyereh, Fr. John Antwi, Fr. Edward Kutin, Fr. Dominic Wiafe, Fr. Godfred Akwasi Owusu, and Fr. Antwi Boasiako.
The new facility was constructed by the Abora and Birago families in recognition and honour of their late mother and grandmother, Elizabeth Afia Birago and Martha Akua Abora respectively.
Clad in white clothes, the family, joined by the congregation, friends, sympathisers, representatives of other churches in the community and individuals, gathered at the auditorium of the new facility in joyous celebration.
Motive
Spokesperson of the family, Mr. Kwabena Owusu Ababio of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, speaking to Opemsuo News, disclosed that the family made the pledge to build a new church auditorium in 2012 during the thanksgiving service of their late mother, Elizabeth Afia Birago.
He further revealed that the decision by the family to construct the church was to honour and recognise the resilience, dedication and, above all, relentless faith in God of their late mother and grandmother despite their limited resources as single parents.
“In 2012, during the thanksgiving service of our late mother, the family decided to build a new place of worship for the Catholic Church in Nintin to honour the memory of our mother and grandmother.”
According to him, their grandmother was a dedicated Catholic who served Christ diligently whilst she struggled to take care of her only daughter (their mother) as a single mother at the time her husband had died.
He continued that, “our father also died whilst we were still young; yet, our mother never gave up and took good care of us despite her limited resources. Today, all my siblings are living abroad except myself, and we want to give glory to God for all that He has done for the family, so this edifice is to give recognition to our mother and grandmother,” he emphasised.
Prayer
Mr. Ababio said the family has no special request except to ask God to incline His ears to the prayers and supplications of worshippers who would offer prayers to Him before the altar. “Our wish is that God would answer whoever may enter this facility and pray to Him before the altar.”
Maintenance
On the occasion, a special fundraising exercise was held to solicit funds for the maintenance of the facility. Mr. Ababio appealed to the leadership of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nintin, to ensure a maintenance culture to preserve the facility for the service of God and mankind.
