The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed strong solidarity with President John Dramani Mahama following the withdrawal of his honorary doctorate by Lincoln University.

In a press statement issued on March 27, 2026, the Bishops said they were concerned about the circumstances surrounding the decision, noting the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and the university, dating back to the era of Kwame Nkrumah. While acknowledging the autonomy of institutions, the Conference called for transparency, fairness, and respect for dignity in such matters.

The Bishops also commended Mr. Mahama for his continued leadership on the global stage, particularly his role in advancing discussions at the United Nations on the legacy of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. They described his efforts as a reflection of a commitment to justice and global solidarity.

Additionally, the Conference praised the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana for its firm support for President Mahama, highlighting the leadership of its General Secretary, Rev. Ernest Birikorang, for what it called a principled and morally grounded response.

On the domestic front, the Bishops urged Parliament to expedite action on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, calling on relevant authorities to ensure its timely transmission to the President for assent.

They further assured him of their prayers for wisdom and courage in the discharge of his duties, while calling on Christians and the broader Ghanaian public to remain united and prayerful.
