The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to undertake a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in selected parts of Accra as part of efforts to improve power supply reliability.
The initiative, which has received approval from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, is expected to strengthen electricity infrastructure in fast-growing communities.
According to a statement issued on March 27, the exercise will involve the replacement and upgrading of twelve power transformers across six primary substations located in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.
ECG said the transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, a move expected to significantly enhance load-handling capacity and reduce system overloads.
“The intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability, stability, and capacity of electricity supply across the country,” ECG noted, adding that the upgrade is critical to meeting the growing energy demands in these communities.
The first phase of the programme is scheduled to commence on April 8 and conclude on April 10. ECG indicated that the exercise will require brief planned power outages in the affected areas to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful execution of the works.
“A detailed schedule outlining the planned activities, expected durations, outage periods, and the specific communities to be impacted will be made available through ECG’s official communication channels,” the statement said.
ECG further assured customers that efforts would be made to minimise the impact of the outages, urging residents and businesses to take note of the schedules and make necessary arrangements.
“This upgrade programme represents a critical step toward strengthening infrastructure, improving system resilience, and delivering a more reliable and efficient electricity service to all customers,” the company added, while expressing appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation.
