The National Football League (NFL) has intensified efforts to grow flag football in Africa with a coaching clinic held at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra.
The multi-day programme brought together coaches from 12 African countries as part of the NFL’s partnership with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), aimed at developing the sport and strengthening grassroots capacity across the continent.
Speaking at the event, Afia Law, International Flag Football Development Manager, highlighted the long-term vision behind the initiative, which focuses on education and youth engagement.
“We have coaches in Accra improving their skills and passing that knowledge on to younger generations in schools, giving them the opportunity to play,” she said.
IFAF Sport Manager, Lars Carlsen, also praised the level of commitment shown by participants during the clinic.
“They are so enthusiastic about everything, and the coaches are eager to learn,” he noted.
The programme attracted key officials from across the region, including Lawrence Ojaideh, who emphasised the value of the training to participating countries.
“Nigeria is preparing for the World Championships, and I will go back to support them with the knowledge gained from this clinic,” he said.
The sessions featured a blend of practical and theoretical training, involving local coaches, educators and international federation representatives. Areas of focus included coaching techniques, game understanding and strategies to increase participation in flag football within schools and communities.
The initiative forms part of the NFL’s broader strategy to expand the reach of flag football globally, while building a sustainable talent pipeline across emerging markets such as Africa.
