The Engineering Council has announced the formation of a committee to investigate the fatal building collapse at Accra New Town, which has claimed three lives.
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, after an uncompleted three-storey structure within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, a location also used by Christian worshippers.
Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has confirmed that three people — two women and a man — died in the collapse. The identities of the deceased are yet to be established.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Monday, March 30, Engineer Isaac Badu, Registrar of the Engineering Council under the Ministry of Housing, said the committee will be constituted immediately to determine the root cause of the disaster and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
He indicated that the Council will collaborate with the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly to conduct a thorough investigation.
“We are setting up a committee to immediately collect resolutions on this collapse. We will work together with Ayawaso Central to investigate and find out the root cause, and then come up with recommendations,” he stated.
He revealed that officials have already visited the scene and engaged the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) as part of preliminary assessments.
Engineer Badu stressed that beyond establishing responsibility, the probe is aimed at strengthening compliance with building regulations to avert similar tragedies. “The essence is to ensure that we prevent future occurrences of such incidents,” he added.
