The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG), in collaboration with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has successfully carried out a major surgical outreach programme in two leading hospitals in the Bono East Region, bringing relief and renewed hope to dozens of women.
The outreach, held simultaneously at the Atebubu and Kintampo District Hospitals, began with the arrival of both SOGOG and KATH medical teams on Thursday for pre-surgical assessments and preparations. Surgeries officially commenced on Friday, 20th March, and concluded on Saturday, 21st March 2026.
Over the two-day surgical exercise, 55 women suffering from various gynaecological conditions underwent successful procedures, completely free of charge.
The procedures carried out included 26 myomectomies (fibroid removal), 18 hysterectomies (uterus removal), 14 abdominal and 4 vaginal, and 3 cystectomies (bladder removal). In addition, the team provided specialist consultations for selected patients and performed minor procedures, including two endometrial and cervical biopsies.
Leading this outreach was Dr. Rex Djokoto, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate of KATH.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Djokoto emphasised the importance of such outreaches in addressing unmet healthcare needs in underserved areas.
He noted that many of these conditions, if left unattended, could significantly affect the quality of life and overall well-being of patients.
Dr. Baafuor Opoku, SOGOG organising secretary and the chief resident who championed involvement of residents at KATH, added that the collaboration strengthened ties between the teaching hospital and district facilities, helping to build local capacity through knowledge sharing.
Also lending support on the ground was Dr. Osman Abdullah Musah, Medical Superintendent at the Atebubu Government Hospital, who expressed profound gratitude to SOGOG, KATH and all partners for bringing specialist care directly to the people.
For many of the beneficiaries, the outreach was nothing short of life-changing. Several women shared emotional accounts of enduring years of discomfort, pain, and financial hardship that prevented them from seeking treatment.
The opportunity to receive free, high-quality surgical care brought not only physical relief but also renewed confidence and dignity.
Tears of joy, gratitude, and relief were evident as patients and their families expressed heartfelt appreciation to the medical team, with many describing the intervention as a “second chance at life”.
This outreach forms part of SOGOG and KATH’s broader strategy to reach vulnerable populations in hard-to-reach areas.
As the hospital celebrates its 70th anniversary, the outreach further reinforces KATH’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence and a leader in advancing accessible specialist healthcare in the northern part of the country and beyond.
The hospital remains committed to bridging gaps in specialist care and transforming lives across the country through outreaches to underserved communities in Ghana.
Members of the outreach team were Dr. Alex Aning-Bonsu, Dr Andrew Vormawor, Dr. Kwabena Achamfour Ababio, Dr. Ofosu Baaku, Dr Heindal Senayah, and Dr Enoch Obeng Arthur.
Others were Dr Naab Tembila, Dr Richmond Amo, Dr Bernard Kodwo Nkum, Dr Rosetta Offei, Dr Dominic Abagre, Dr Angela Banahene, Dr. Fred Fongang, Dr DanBeck Powell, Dr. Ellen Gamelie, Dr Nicholas Opoku Osei, Dr John Arthur, Dr Raymond Addo, Dr Collins Owusu, Dr Emmanuel Asagzyire, Dr Derrick Jonfiah, Dr Lawrence Bonnah Junior, Stephen Boadu, Dr Emmanuel Donkor and Dr Huldah Twumasi.
The rest are Dr Daniel Okine, Dr Debora Danso, Dr Andrew Turkson, Regina Odei (Midwife), Faustina Adu Gyamfi (Midwife), and Mrs. Vasty Serwaa Adu-Minta (Midwife).
All surgical equipment and medical consumables used during the outreach were generously donated to the team, ensuring that beneficiaries received comprehensive care at no cost.
