President John Dramani Mahama has lauded the people of the Volta Region for their exceptional commitment to environmental cleanliness, calling on other parts of the country to emulate the region’s standards.
Speaking during a presidential dialogue with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Monday, March 30, the President described the Volta Region as one of the cleanest and most serene areas in Ghana, noting the visible absence of plastic waste across communities.
“You drive through the Volta Region, through villages, and you don’t find plastic by the roadside.
“Even around the houses, the environment is very clean,” he said.
“We must send all the other people in Ghana there to go and learn,” he added jokingly.
President Mahama commended residents, as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), for sustaining a culture of discipline and environmental responsibility that has kept the region clean.
He stressed that the Volta Region’s example demonstrates that maintaining sanitation is achievable through collective effort and community values, rather than relying solely on state interventions.
The President also pointed to the region’s lack of major mineral deposits, particularly gold, as a factor that has helped preserve its natural environment.
Drawing a contrast with areas affected by illegal mining, he suggested that the absence of such activities has spared the Volta Region from environmental degradation.
“The blessing is that no gold or minerals have been found there, and I’m sure the ancestors are praying that gold will not suddenly appear somewhere in the region,” he remarked.
President Mahama urged stakeholders, including local authorities and communities across the country, to adopt similar sanitation practices to improve environmental conditions nationwide.
