The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has raised concerns over the effectiveness of the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), describing it as inadequate for managing records within the road sector.
According to him, weaknesses in the system have contributed to poor documentation of projects, particularly those inherited by the current administration.
He noted that gaps in data and procurement inconsistencies have made it difficult to verify key details, including whether proper tender processes were followed.
Speaking to journalists after his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Minister stressed the need for urgent reforms to strengthen transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
He explained that discrepancies in project records have led to confusion over financial obligations, with some contractors disputing figures presented by the government due to unreliable data.
“As for GIFMIS, it is something that we need to augment. The current system is no longer fit for purpose,” he said, adding that ongoing efforts by the Finance Ministry to introduce a more efficient system would be critical, especially given the scale of financial transactions within the roads sector.
