Sheikh Arimiyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, has warned about what he describes as the far-reaching implications of accepting LGBTQI+ practices, cautioning that it threatens the foundation of society.
“The family is society in microcosm,” he said. “If you want to destroy any society, begin by destroying the family.”
He urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his stance on LGBTQI+ issues, emphasising what he believes to be the potential impact on Ghanaian society and family structures.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, April 2, 2026, Sheikh Shaibu expressed concern over President Mahama’s recent remarks that “the issue of LGBTQI is not the most important issue we face as a nation.”
He likened the situation to harmful behaviours, arguing that societal consequences must be considered when such issues become widespread.
Sheikh Shaibu further stated that any attempt to undermine Ghanaian family structures is, in his view, an attack on the nation itself. He also addressed arguments based on personal rights, saying those advocating for LGBTQI+ acceptance should consider the broader societal implications.
While acknowledging the importance of human rights, Sheikh Shaibu maintained that the LGBTQI+ movement poses significant concerns. He called on President Mahama to reflect on cultural values that define Ghanaian identity.
“For us in Ghana, culturally speaking, that is why we say it is objectionable and immoral,” he said.
He concluded by urging the youth to uphold cultural values and identity, stressing the need to preserve what he described as long-standing societal norms.
