Two Members of Parliament (MPs), have introduced a Private Members’ Bill to amend Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution, seeking to set a maximum age limit of 65 for parliamentary candidates.
The MPs, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an Independent MP for Asante Akyem North, and Madam Ibrahimah Mohammed Zuwera, a National Democratic Congress MP for Salaga South, proposed legislation aims to prevent individuals above this threshold from contesting parliamentary elections.
In a draft submitted to the Clerk of Parliament, the MPs argued that the current lack of a maximum age limit was no longer tenable, given the evolving demands of governance and the need for legislative efficiency.
It said, “Parliamentary duties require sustained physical stamina, cognitive agility, and responsiveness to complex policy challenges, including digital transformation, climate change, and global economic integration.”
According to the draft, the proposed age limit is intended to promote sustained performance in legislative duties, reduce risks associated with age-related incapacity, and encourage structured leadership transition within Parliament.
The MPs also noted that the proposal aligned with international best practices in institutional capacity building.
