The RNP Foundation has launched an ambitious nationwide tree planting campaign, warning that a lack of public understanding of climate change remains a major challenge in Ghana.
At the launch event in Keta on April 4, 2026, Programme Coordinator Raymond Setsoafia Avevor said many Ghanaians still do not fully grasp the impact of climate change, stressing the need for deliberate education and community engagement.
“Many people don’t understand what climate change is. We need a deliberate effort to educate people and help them play their role in addressing it,” he said.
The campaign, dubbed “Operation One Million Trees,” aims to plant one million trees across Ghana, with the first phase targeting 50,000 trees in communities within the Volta Region.
The initiative began with the distribution of 500 seedlings at a symbolic launch in Keta, involving schools, churches, and local groups.
According to the foundation, the use of fruit-bearing trees is intended to encourage participation and give communities a sense of ownership.
“To motivate people, we included fruit trees like oranges so they can benefit directly while protecting the environment,” Mr Avevor explained.
Founder and CEO, Richard Norkplim Pomeyie, described the initiative as a grassroots response to global environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and resource depletion.
He stressed that meaningful change must begin at the community level.
“Climate change and environmental degradation are urgent issues. Addressing them requires collective action, starting from communities like this,” he said.
The foundation also used the event to commission a water storage tank to address water shortages in the area, highlighting the link between environmental sustainability and basic human needs.
With support from the Forestry Commission and local stakeholders, the foundation says it is positioning itself as a key player in climate education, ecosystem restoration, and youth engagement.
The organisation is calling on individuals, institutions, and partners to support the initiative as it expands across the country.
