President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has paid a visit to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, as part of his three-day state visit to the country.

The visit to the site at Adjen Kotoku in the Greater Accra Region last Thursday, was after Zoomlion Ghana Limited signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Geo Pomona Waste Management from Zimbabwe, aimed at improving infrastructure, promoting environmental sustainability and contributing to cleaner communities.

The facility visit afforded President Mnangagwa the opportunity to observe at first hand the country’s advancements in sustainable waste management and recycling.

The engagement reflected the shared commitment of Ghana and Zimbabwe to deepening cooperation in environmental sustainability and promoting innovative, homegrown solutions to sanitation and waste management challenges across the continent.

Commendable model

President Mnangagwa stated that the facility was a commendable model for efficient waste management and environmental protection in Africa.

He said that underscored its potential to serve as a benchmark for other countries across the continent.

He said the visit underscored the shared commitment of Ghana and Zimbabwe to deepening cooperation in environmental sustainability while promoting innovative, homegrown solutions to sanitation and waste management challenges.

President Mnangagwa added that the adoption of modern technology at the plant had significantly transformed waste handling practices, addressing long-standing sanitation challenges and offering more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for communities.

The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, led the president and his entourage on a tour of the facility, providing detailed insights into its recycling and composting operations.

Present during the visit were the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Chairman of Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, and other officials.

Strengthening collaboration

Mr Agyepong stated that the visit of President Mnangagwa to the recycling plant symbolised a deepening of African collaboration and strategic partnership in sustainable development.

He explained that the engagement between the two countries had evolved from earlier interactions, particularly in agriculture, into broader cooperation in waste management and environmental sustainability.

Mr Agyepong said the partnership with Geo Pomona Waste Management was aimed at supporting Zimbabwe with technology, expertise and investment to improve sanitation systems in cities such as Harare.

The Jospong Group’s Executive Chairman stated that the collaboration was grounded in a shared vision of African solutions to African challenges, particularly in transforming waste into economic opportunity.

“This visit is not only a privilege but also a strong symbol of African collaboration, reflecting our shared vision to build sustainable and innovative solutions for the continent,” Mr Agyepong said.

Sustainable waste solutions

He said the Jospong Group, with its extensive network of subsidiaries across multiple sectors, was committed to delivering sustainable waste management solutions across Africa.

Mr Agyepong said the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant had the capacity to process large volumes of municipal waste daily, using modern technology and skilled human intervention to convert waste into valuable resources such as compost.

He explained that the plant’s operations demonstrated how waste could be transformed into wealth, while contributing to environmental protection and job creation.

Mr Agyepong said the partnership with Zimbabwe would help replicate similar systems to drive a circular economy and create employment opportunities in the green sector.

He expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the government for supporting local enterprises to expand into other African countries.

“Our goal is not just to manage waste but to build a cleaner, stronger and more sustainable Africa through strategic partnerships and innovation,” he added.
