Crowds of people headed for the coast joined long queues at the entrances of the La Pleasure Beach and the Laboma Beach Resort to cool off as they prepared to resume work and school tomorrow (Tuesday, April 7).
This led to a thick gridlock with some revellers spending several minutes in traffic to make their way to the beaches.
Others also decided to get down from the commercial vehicles at the Olympia bus stop to trek as a result of the traffic jams.
The medians became a parking centre for many of the drivers, with some volunteers taking GH₵ 5 from vehicle owners to ensure their safety.
The police were seen on the ground to control the traffic situation, mainly on the Teshie-bound section of the beach road.
While some of the beachgoers held their own parties at the beach, others, mostly youthful, were busily engaged in games, including football, at the shore.
Buying and selling activities featured rapidly, and in high volumes, and with great energy as the crowd grew thicker at 4 p.m.
Ticket vendors at the La Pleasure Beach Resort resorted to opening a new entrance close to the Polo Beach Club to ease the huge numbers at the main entrance.
Relaxation
Ohemaa Amponsah, who had come all the way from Pokuase with her family, said they were not at the beach for any particular event but to just relax and reconnect with her extended family.
“We did not know that the beach would get this crowded, so we would not have come, but it is too late to go back.
We have been standing here for more than 20 mins, and the queue doesn’t seem to be moving,” she said.
Haneef Alfa said he was tired of staying indoors and had come to the beach with his course mates to play football and swim.
Dennis Tamaklo, a patron, said Easter holidays were the only times he visited the beaches due to the high number of patrons.
He added that he loved the beach because of the breeze, saying, “I really enjoy the moments alone here, and it is fun”.
Sales
The numbers reflected in sales with Felicia Owusuaa, a bottled water vendor, disclosed that she had sold more than 10 packs of bottled water in the last three hours, with a unit going for GH₵ 5.
A Kebab vendor, who gave his name as Idris, said he had just started selling and was hopeful that he would be able to cash in with the huge numbers of beachgoers that thronged the beach.
