The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaian travellers to Senegal that vaccinations against yellow fever, DPT, measles, and hepatitis A and B are recommended but no longer mandatory for entry into the country.

In a public announcement issued on Tuesday, April 7, the Ministry said it had been informed by Senegal’s Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad in Dakar that although vaccination against certain diseases is encouraged for health and safety reasons, travellers are no longer required to present vaccination certificates upon arrival.

“All Ghanaian travellers to Senegal are to take note of these guidelines and to ensure that they are medically prepared for travel,” the statement read. “This information is being circulated to enhance the health and safety of Ghanaian travellers.”

Shift in travel health requirements

The Ministry did not indicate whether the diseases listed are currently prevalent in Senegal, nor did it clarify whether the revised policy represents a permanent change or a temporary adjustment.

Yellow fever vaccination, in particular, has long been a standard requirement for travel across several West African countries, making the latest directive a notable shift from previously strict border health controls.

Travellers urged to prioritise health

Despite the relaxed entry requirements, the Ministry strongly advised travellers to prioritise their health by taking recommended vaccinations before departure.

Ghanaian travellers are encouraged to consult healthcare providers ahead of their trips, even though proof of vaccination is no longer a legal requirement.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and urged travellers to comply with all health and entry protocols of their destination countries.
