The Ghana National Association of Private Schools has successfully engaged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address growing concerns over environmental permitting requirements affecting private schools across the country.

The high-level meeting, held in Accra, on March 30, 2026 forms part of GNAPS’ ongoing advocacy to ensure that regulatory enforcement within the education sector is fair, consultative, and aligned with the operational realities of private institutions while maintaining national environmental standards.

GNAPS was joined by key stakeholders, including the Ghana National Council of Private Schools and the Conference of Heads of Private Secondary Schools, reflecting a united front within the private education sector.

Key Outcomes of the Engagement

  1. Joint Technical Committee Established
A five-member joint technical committee has been formed, comprising representatives from the private school associations and the EPA. The committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of regulatory implementation challenges and proposing practical, sustainable solutions.
Its recommendations are expected to enhance regulatory clarity and create workable compliance pathways for private schools within Ghana’s environmental framework.
  2. Temporary Suspension of Enforcement Actions
In a significant development, the EPA has directed its operational officers to temporarily suspend enforcement actions related to compliance notices and sanctions affecting private schools.
This interim measure follows concerns raised by GNAPS regarding the immediate operational impact of enforcement and is intended to allow space for dialogue and policy refinement pending the committee’s findings.

Commitment to Collaboration and Compliance

GNAPS has welcomed the responsiveness of the EPA leadership and the collaborative approach demonstrated during the engagement. The association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with regulators to ensure that environmental policies are implemented in a balanced and sustainable manner.

The association also assured private school operators and stakeholders of its continued leadership in advocating for fair regulatory practices while promoting full compliance with national environmental standards.
