Gender Ministry Announces Psychosocial Support after Boat Accident Claimed 9 Lives

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has made arrangements for the provision of psychological support to families of victims of the boat accident in the East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The Ministry, in a statement, said the Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the relevant district authorities, had been directed to immediately engage affected families.

They will provide psychosocial support and assess urgent needs to mitigate the impact of this tragedy.

The Ministry further mourned the nine who drowned in the accident.

“The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, on her behalf and on behalf of the Ministry, extends her deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the tragic Volta Lake boat accident.”

It also reiterated the importance of safety measures in water transport while calling for strengthened adherence to safety protocols to prevent such tragic occurrences.

“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that vulnerable families receive the care. protection and support they need in times of crisis. The Ministry stands in solidarity with all affected persons and assures them that no one will be left behind.”

Accident
A report by the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) confirmed the death of nine individuals after 14 passengers travelling from Yeji to Congo had their boat capsized near Mataiko due to severe weather on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Five males were successfully rescued during a search and rescue operation, while nine others drowned.

Seven bodies out of the nine have been recovered. This includes two women and five children.

Search teams continue to look for 2 missing persons, according to the GMA.
