The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has arrested a 45-year-old driver for possession of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an intelligence-led operation at Pankrono in Kumasi.

Targeted anti-drug operation

In a press release issued on April 8, the police said the operation was carried out on April 5 at about 7:00 p.m. by personnel from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit in Kumasi.

The exercise, which covered Pankrono and surrounding areas, formed part of efforts to clamp down on illicit drug peddling and usage within the metropolis.

During the operation, officers spotted the suspect, identified as Foster Owusu, also known as “Master Pee”, attempting to lock up a single-room facility and flee upon noticing the presence of the police. He was immediately arrested.

Suspected drugs retrieved

A search conducted in the room led to the retrieval of 39 compressed, sellotaped slab parcels of dried leaves concealed in a “Ghana Must Go” bag, as well as 10 additional compressed parcels hidden in a black sack. The substances are suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Suspect denies ownership

The suspect denied ownership and possession of the exhibits, claiming the room belonged to his girlfriend, identified as Anita, and another individual named Cindy.

He told investigators that he had visited the premises but found the occupants absent, adding that the door had been left open.

Forensic examination underway

Police said the retrieved exhibits were sealed and labelled in the presence of the suspect and an independent witness.

The substances are to be forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory in Accra for analysis and a formal report.

Investigations continue

The suspect remains in police custody, assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to locate the other individuals mentioned in connection with the case.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against drug-related crimes and urged the public to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing operations.
