The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Setor Dumelo has inaugurated a nine-member Grains and Legumes Development Authority Board.
The board, chaired by Dr Joseph Asako Azumyarn, is tasked to make sure that the country gets quality and affordable grains.
The members also included Assanaba Imoro, Dr Solomon Gyan Ansah, Lordson Sammor-Duah, Mohammed Issifu Pangabu, Donald A. Awintoma Adabre, Awuni Anaahu, Yakubu Abdulai Hamid and Kwame David Amankwah Addai.
Importance of board
Addressing the members after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Dumelo reminded them that being a board member of the authority was of great importance and significance.
He said any discussion on agriculture in the country was about grains and legumes and “so, you will be tasked to make sure that we get quality grains, we get affordable grains,” adding that they would also find a market for the produce of farmers.
Mr Dumelo said moving forward, adding value to the grains and legumes produced in the country would be part of their mandate.
“So, your board is a very important one, which forms almost the foundation of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture,” the minister concluded, assuring that there would be periodical meeting to move the country forward in the right direction.
Response
Responding on behalf of the chairman, the Executive Secretary of the authority, Mr Imoro, expressed gratitude to the President through the ministry for making it possible and successful for the inauguration of the board.
He said the Grains and Legumes Authority was the foundation of quality seeds in the country, reminding members that “our mandate is to ensure that we produce quality foundation seeds.”
Mr Imoro, therefore, described the role of the board as key and assured the minister that the board would make sure it carried out its role successfully to ensure there were quality and enough foundation seeds for farmers of the country.
