Concerned youth in the Upper East Region have taken to the streets to protest the deteriorating condition of a major road linking Zuarungu and Bolgatanga.
The demonstrators are largely from communities within the Attorney General Dominic Ayine’s Constituency. They say years of neglect have left the stretch from Bolga Kulaa to the timber market in a deplorable state. According to them, the road is riddled with deep potholes and excessive dust, making daily commuting difficult and posing serious health and safety risks.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the youth expressed frustration over what they describe as government inaction. They claim the situation has worsened despite their strong political support in the 2024 general elections, where the National Democratic Congress secured 15 parliamentary seats in the region.
“Eleven MPs pass through this road to their various constituencies. In fact, all the seats from Upper East are from the NDC. What else do you want us to do before you can team up to work on this road? Ayinga Stephen quizzes.
Some of the protesters told GBC News that they feel disappointed and neglected. The group is demanding urgent intervention, giving authorities a two-week ultimatum to begin rehabilitation work on the affected stretch. They warn that failure to act within the given timeframe could lead to intensified demonstrations.
Speaking to GBC News, a member of the group, Raymond Nsohbono Abane, emphasized that their protest is not politically motivated but driven by the need for safer roads and improved living conditions.
“Many people have suffered continuously from sore throat, chest pains and cold because of the dust. In fact, you cannot even wear anything nice and pass here to work place. Why all these sufferings?”
Residents are calling on government and relevant agencies to prioritize the road project to ease transportation challenges and boost local economic development.
