The chiefs, elders, and kingmakers of Gbawe, led by Nii Boi Kojo II, held a landmark Royal Community Engagement at the Gbawe Kwatei Family Palace, bringing together residents, stakeholders, and the media to deliberate on key issues affecting the community and its surrounding areas.
The engagement served as a platform for dialogue, unity, and forward-thinking leadership. Addressing the gathering, the Chief of Gbawe, Nii Boi Kojo II, reaffirmed the commitment of traditional authorities to not only preserve culture but also tackle the modern-day challenges confronting the community and its environs.
Central to the discussions was the introduction of a Community Situation Initiative, designed to create a structured system for identifying, reporting, and resolving issues within the community. The chiefs emphasised that proactive engagement and cooperation between residents and leadership would be key to its success.
Concerns over indiscipline among motorbike riders dominated part of the discussions, with elders highlighting the increasing recklessness on the roads. They warned that the disregard for traffic regulations continues to endanger lives and called for stricter monitoring and responsible riding practices.
Similarly, reckless driving by motorists was strongly condemned. The leadership noted that speeding and careless driving habits are becoming too common, posing serious risks to pedestrians and other road users.
Another major issue raised was drug abuse, particularly among the youth. The chiefs described it as a growing threat to the future of the community and urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to take a firm stance. They also called for stronger collaboration with law enforcement to combat the spread and use of illegal substances such as tramadol, Red, and shisha.
They further emphasised the importance of education and awareness campaigns to inform young people about the dangers and long-term consequences of substance abuse. The chiefs encouraged schools, religious institutions, and local organisations to play an active role in mentoring and guiding the youth towards positive life choices. Additionally, they appealed to government agencies to provide rehabilitation and support services for those already affected, stressing that addressing drug abuse requires not only enforcement but also compassion and community-driven solutions.
Education took centre stage as a critical area of concern. The elders acknowledged the low educational standards in parts of Gbawe and stressed the need for urgent improvement through discipline, commitment, and support from all stakeholders.
They highlighted the importance of improving school infrastructure, ensuring adequate teaching and learning materials, and creating a more conducive environment for both students and teachers. The elders also called on parents to take a more active role in their children’s education by monitoring academic progress and encouraging regular school attendance.
Furthermore, they urged teachers and school administrators to remain dedicated to their duties and to uphold high standards of professionalism. The elders emphasised the need for community-based initiatives, such as after-school programmes and mentorship schemes, to help guide students and keep them focused on their academic goals. They also appealed to government authorities and private partners to invest more resources in the education sector in Gbawe, noting that quality education is essential for the long-term development and prosperity of the community.
In a major announcement that drew applause from the gathering, the leadership introduced a scholarship initiative for outstanding students within Gbawe and its environs. Under this initiative, the best-performing student(s) will receive full sponsorship through university. The chiefs explained that this move is aimed at rewarding excellence, motivating students to strive for academic success, and reducing the financial burden on families.
They further noted that the selection process would be transparent and merit-based, ensuring that only deserving and hardworking students benefit from the scheme. In addition to academic performance, qualities such as discipline, leadership, and commitment to community service may also be considered. The leadership encouraged students across the community to take their studies seriously, emphasising that the scholarship presents a life-changing opportunity.
The chiefs also revealed plans to partner with educational institutions, alumni groups, and philanthropic organisations to sustain and expand the initiative over time. They expressed hope that the programme would inspire a culture of excellence and healthy competition among the youth, while also producing future leaders who will give back to the development of Gbawe and its surrounding communities.
They further emphasised that this educational support forms part of a broader vision to invest in the future of the community by nurturing talent and creating opportunities for young people to excel.
The engagement concluded with a strong call for unity and shared responsibility. The chiefs reminded residents that progress depends on collective effort, discipline, and a commitment to positive change.
They urged community members to set aside their differences and work together towards common goals that will benefit both present and future generations. Emphasising the value of peace and cooperation, the chiefs called on the youth to be agents of change and to actively contribute to the development of the area.
The leadership also encouraged regular community dialogues and forums where residents can openly discuss challenges and propose practical solutions. They assured the people of their continued support and dedication to addressing key issues affecting the community. Ultimately, the chiefs expressed confidence that with unity, accountability, and sustained effort, Gbawe can achieve meaningful growth and lasting development.
With this renewed direction, Gbawe stands poised to confront its challenges while building a stronger, more responsible, and forward-looking community.
The renewed sense of purpose demonstrated during the engagement reflects a collective determination to address pressing concerns and create lasting solutions. Residents were encouraged to remain actively involved in community initiatives and to support policies and programmes that promote development and social well-being.
The chiefs expressed optimism that, with sustained collaboration between traditional authorities, government institutions, and the people, Gbawe will experience steady progress across key sectors such as education, security, and youth empowerment.
They emphasised that the journey ahead requires patience, resilience, and a shared vision, but assured the community that the foundations for a brighter future have already been set.
