Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in a confrontation with police following a daylight attack on a mobile money vendor at Tema Community 5 in the Greater Accra Region.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspects allegedly targeted a vendor at Aba Fosuah Plaza under the pretence of conducting a cash-out transaction.

According to a statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Command and signed by its Head of Public Affairs, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, one of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor and requested a transaction.

The statement explained that as the vendor reached into her bag to retrieve her phone, the suspect allegedly pulled out a pistol and demanded the bag containing cash.

Vendor shot during struggle

Police said the victim resisted, leading to a struggle involving both the pillion rider and the motorbike rider.

During the confrontation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag before the suspects fled the scene.

Police pursue suspects

The statement indicated that a police patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for routine security duties, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the fleeing suspects.

It added that the suspects, who were riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778, allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel at Community 6.

Police returned fire, resulting in both suspects sustaining gunshot wounds and falling off the motorbike.

They were subsequently rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Items retrieved

Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a Ghana Card, a motorbike key and cash amounting to GH¢11,390. Police also recovered a spent cartridge at the robbery scene. The Ghana Card was later identified as belonging to the robbery victim.

Police assurance

The statement said the injured vendor is currently receiving medical treatment and is in a stable condition.

The Tema Regional Police Command assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining safety and security, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
