Renowned Ghanaian-born plastic surgeon and global health advocate Michael K. Obeng has been honoured with the African Humanitarian Award at the 2026 African Heritage Awards held in Accra, in recognition of his extensive medical outreach and contributions to healthcare development across underserved communities.

The Beverly Hills-based surgeon, who is Harvard-trained, was celebrated at a high-profile ceremony that brought together policymakers, former heads of state and leading figures from across the continent. The event concluded with remarks from John Dramani Mahama, highlighting the significance of the honourees’ contributions to Africa’s development.

Dr Obeng, founder and chief executive of RESTORE Worldwide, has built a reputation for delivering complex reconstructive surgical care to disadvantaged populations globally. Through the organisation, he has led medical missions across several countries, restoring lives through specialised surgical interventions while promoting long-term healthcare capacity building.

In his acceptance speech, he underscored the need for a shift in how Africa approaches development, stating: “First, I give all glory to God—for the journey, the calling, and the responsibility to serve. Africa does not need charity—Africa needs systems, vision, and ownership.”

He further emphasised the importance of sustainability in humanitarian work, adding: “True impact is not what we give—it is what we build that outlives us.”

Beyond his surgical missions, Dr Obeng is also advancing healthcare innovation on the continent through MiKO Pharma Ltd, an initiative focused on strengthening pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. His work reflects a broader vision of reducing dependency on external systems while improving access to quality healthcare.

Widely referred to as “The Surgeon’s Surgeon,” Dr Obeng has combined clinical excellence with a commitment to long-term impact, bridging gaps in reconstructive care while advocating systemic improvements in global health delivery.

The African Heritage Awards, organised by Heritage Times, is a pan-African platform that recognises individuals driving excellence in leadership, innovation and humanitarian service. The awards rotate among host countries, celebrating Africans whose work continues to shape global narratives and contribute to the continent’s progress.

Dr Obeng’s recognition adds to a growing list of honours acknowledging his role in transforming lives through medicine and his enduring commitment to building resilient healthcare systems across Africa and beyond.
