The Ghana Police Service has arrested a security guard at the University of Ghana after a video showing him assaulting a civilian circulated on social media.
The Police Service, in a statement issued on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, identified the suspect as Ebenezer Annor Darko and said he is assisting with investigations. “Further development will be communicated to the public,” the statement said.
The arrest follows an earlier response by the University of Ghana to the incident. In a statement issued on April 11, 2026, the University said the young man seen in the video had been apprehended on suspicion of theft and is not a student of the institution.
The University said it had taken note of the footage and had begun investigations to establish the facts surrounding the incident, in line with its Consolidated Code of Conduct for Employees.
The officer was identified as a member of the University’s Safety and Security Services Directorate.
The University said if the officer is found culpable, disciplinary action will be taken in line with its regulations and the laws of Ghana on assault, after due process.
It added that it operates a zero-tolerance policy on violence and expects staff to maintain professional conduct in their dealings with the public.
The Police Service also cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands when dealing with suspected offenders.
