Residents of Wawase, a community between Koforidua and Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, have appealed to the Municipal Assembly to urgently rehabilitate their inner roads to improve access to their homes.

They say the poor state of the roads, coupled with the absence of drainage systems, is hindering movement and transportation within the community. The appeal was made during a visit by GBC’s Eastern Regional Correspondent to assess the situation.

Wawase, which has a population of over 4,000 residents, is expanding rapidly due to its strategic location for economic activity. It is within walking distance of the Nkurakan Market and less than a 10-minute drive from Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, making it an attractive place for settlement.

However, a visit to the area revealed that many of the inner roads are in poor condition and lack proper drainage. Portions of land earmarked for road construction have also been encroached upon.

Residents say the situation poses serious safety concerns. They explained that in emergencies, such as illness or fire outbreaks, the lack of accessible roads makes it difficult for vehicles, including ambulances and fire tenders, to reach affected areas.
The community also lacks access to piped water from Ghana Water Limited, making water supply a challenge.

In an interview with GBC News, the Dademantse of Wawase, Nene Adade Komesuor, said residents had contributed funds to purchase stones to manually improve sections of the road. He noted, however, that further progress requires intervention from the Assembly.

He appealed to the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, Francis Addo Akumatey, and the Member of Parliament, Dr Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, to support efforts to rehabilitate the roads and improve accessibility.

Some residents also raised concerns about high-voltage transmission lines in parts of the community, which they say pose a threat to lives. They warned that erosion caused by poor drainage around the installations could lead to the collapse of the structures during heavy rains.

They have therefore called on the Ghana Grid Company Limited to address the situation to prevent any potential disaster.
