Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is leading Ghana’s delegation to Barcelona, Spain, for the 4th High-Level Meeting of the “In Defence of Democracy Initiative” scheduled for April 18, 2026.

The international forum brings together heads of state, government officials, and civil society leaders to deliberate on strategies to safeguard democratic governance, strengthen institutions, and counter threats to democratic values worldwide.

Ghana’s participation underscores its commitment to democratic principles, constitutional rule, and multilateral cooperation in promoting good governance.

The Vice President is expected to highlight Ghana’s democratic experience, peaceful transitions of power, and ongoing reforms aimed at deepening citizen participation and institutional accountability.

The “In Defence of Democracy Initiative” was launched to create a global platform for dialogue and coordinated action against democratic backsliding, disinformation, and political instability.

This year’s meeting will focus on resilience of electoral systems, protection of civic space, and the role of technology in strengthening or undermining democracy.

While in Barcelona, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang will join panel discussions and hold bilateral meetings with other participating leaders to explore partnerships on governance, education, and gender inclusion in leadership.

The delegation includes senior officials from the Office of the Vice President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ghana has consistently been recognized as one of Africa’s stable democracies, and its presence at the summit is expected to contribute perspectives from the continent on sustaining democratic gains amid global challenges.
