The Fisheries Commission has met with the CERATH Development Organization (CDO) to discuss a new strategic framework aimed at empowering women across Ghana’s fisheries value chain.

The engagement took place on April 16, 2026, at the National Premix Secretariat conference room in Accra. Deputy Executive Director (Technical), Prof. Berchie Asiedu, led the Commission’s team alongside divisional heads.

CDO presented its 7-year strategic framework covering 2026–2032, which focuses on expanding opportunities and safeguards for women in fisheries, particularly in post-harvest activities where women dominate.

Key pillars of the initiative include scaling up the Safe Fish Certification and Licensing Scheme (SFCLS) to improve food safety and market access, and enhancing climate resilience for post-harvest actors facing risks from heat, flooding, and changing fish stocks.

The framework also targets improved monitoring and feedback systems to track compliance and outcomes, and advancing women’s leadership and participation in fisheries governance at local and national levels.

Prof. Asiedu said the collaboration aligns with the Commission’s vision of transforming Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture into a modern, sustainable, and job-creating sector.

He noted that women processors and traders are central to food security and value addition, yet face gaps in finance, technology, and decision-making.

Discussions explored areas of alignment between CDO’s plan and the Commission’s ongoing programmes, including opportunities for partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Both parties outlined next steps for joint action, including technical working sessions and pilot interventions.

The Fisheries Commission said it looked forward to working closely with CDO to deliver inclusive and sustainable outcomes that strengthen livelihoods, reduce post-harvest losses, and raise standards across Ghana’s fisheries sector.
