Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has pledged full government support to fast-rising boxer Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey, delivering a major boost to the young champion’s growing ambition of winning a world title.
The endorsement follows Allotey’s emphatic seventh-round stoppage of Namibia’s Jonas Erastus on April 10, a victory that secured his fifth professional title in just 21 months and further cemented his status as one of Ghana’s most exciting boxing prospects.
The minister, who watched the bout ringside at the Bukom Boxing Arena, reaffirmed his confidence in the fighter during a meeting at the Sports and Recreation Ministry.
“I believe in you and the work your team is doing. The Ministry is fully behind you and will support you because Ghana needs a world champion,” Mr Adams declared.
Guided by legends
In the aftermath of his latest triumph, Allotey has sought to ground his rapid ascent with guidance from Ghana’s boxing greats, including Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey.
At the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee, where officials posed with his collection of titles, Nelson offered pointed advice on discipline, humility and focus.
According to Allotey, the three-time world champion urged him to avoid distractions, remain loyal to those investing in his career and maintain a strong moral compass as he climbs the ranks.
Quartey, meanwhile, drilled into the mental side of elite competition.
“
He told me to see myself as unbeatable, and that any opponent I face must go down,” Allotey revealed after their meeting at Bukom. “He also told me not to joke with training and to work on my jab and defence.”
Champion with a cause
Beyond the ring, the newly crowned WBA Africa Gold champion has also been making an impact in his community. He concluded his “KO Teenage Pregnancy Campaign” with an outreach to final-year students at Bishop Mixed School in Accra, promoting education and discipline.
Led by his trainer, Ofori Asare, and manager Sarah Lotus Asare, Allotey distributed books carrying anti-teenage pregnancy messages — an initiative he had already symbolically launched during his fight against Erastus with customised gear bearing the campaign slogan.
The programme reflects a deliberate effort by the boxer to leverage his growing profile for social impact in Ga-Mashie, his home base.
Rising profile, rising expectations
Allotey also connected with beneficiaries of the Besesaka scholarship initiative, which supports young boxing talents at Bukom through education and development, further reinforcing his commitment to giving back.
With five titles in under two years, backing from the government, mentorship from legends and a growing public profile, Allotey’s trajectory is accelerating.
