Ghana’s presence on the continental mixed martial arts stage has received a major boost after Daniel Wadieh clinched gold in the lightweight division at the 2026 African Mixed Martial Arts Championship in Luanda, Angola.

Wadieh produced a composed and dominant display in Sunday’s final, overcoming DR Congo’s Ken Saleh to secure the शीर्ष prize and cap a flawless debut appearance for Ghana at the competition.

The Netherlands-based fighter emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, combining technical precision with physical strength as he progressed through the ranks. His campaign gathered momentum with a strong run through the preliminary and quarter-final stages before a decisive semi-final victory over Cameroon’s Alex Junior Kamgang.

Heading into the final, Wadieh maintained control and discipline, ultimately outclassing his opponent to seal victory and deliver Ghana’s first major statement at the continental MMA event.

Speaking after the bout, the Ghanaian captain signalled the country’s growing ambition in the sport, warning rivals that a new generation of fighters is being developed to compete at the highest level. He stressed the importance of sustained investment in athlete development to build a stronger pipeline for the future.

Wadieh also acknowledged the role of supporters, noting that their encouragement played a key part in his journey to the top of African MMA.

President of the Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Federation, Collins Zoiku, praised the fighter’s performance, describing it as a reward for rigorous preparation.

“Daniel prepared very well and has lifted the flag of Ghana high,” Zoiku said, adding that the victory should encourage greater investment in mixed martial arts from both government and corporate stakeholders.

Wadieh, who trains in the Netherlands under coaches Frans Djimtche and Emirhan Bulduk, returns home as a continental champion, marking a defining moment for Ghana’s emerging footprint in global MMA competition.
