The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has initiated a recall of a limited batch of 2026 embossed number plates after routine quality checks found that some plates failed to meet durability standards.

According to the Authority, printed characters on the affected plates were fading prematurely.

In a statement, it said once the defect was detected, the entire batch was immediately withdrawn from circulation, though some had already been issued.

The DVLA is urging all affected vehicle owners to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and take full responsibility for the oversight,” the DVLA said in a statement on Monday.

The Authority noted that the issue was identified through its internal quality control systems and stressed that steps are being taken to strengthen quality assurance processes to prevent a recurrence.

“The DVLA remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality vehicle registration services to the public,” the statement added.
