A fire outbreak at GRIDCo’s Akosombo substation has triggered widespread power curtailment across multiple regions, with the Electricity Company of Ghana announcing rotational outages affecting the Ashanti, Volta, Oti, Eastern, Greater Accra, and parts of the Central Regions throughout Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, has significantly reduced power supply to several regions, forcing the ECG to implement a series of timed curtailments from the early hours of Wednesday through to midnight. The affected regions include Accra East, Accra West, Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, and Oti.
In the Ashanti Region, the ECG scheduled four separate curtailment windows. From midnight to 6:00 am, areas including Domeabra, Apromase, Appiadu Kokoben, Trabuom, Manso-Nkwanta, Boko, Twedie, and parts of Ejisu were affected. The morning window from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm impacted Asanso, Zongo, Amoafo, Abodom, Dichemso, Kumawu, Agona Mampong, and Nsuta Bodomase among others. The afternoon window from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm affected Abakomade, parts of Abuakwa, parts of Tanoso, Fumesua, Kwamo, Tetrem, Adwumam, KNUST, Dwansa, Agogo, Nyaboo, Atonsu, Bantama, and Race course. The evening window from 6:00 pm to midnight affected Domeabra, Apromase, Appiadu Kokoben, Donyina, parts of Ejisu, Trabuom, Manso-Nkwanta, and surrounding areas.
The Eastern Region experienced curtailed supply in two windows. The morning period from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm affected Asamankese Township, Yayo, Pinora Industries, Bunso Lindador, Kibi, Nkronso, Potroase, Bepong, Kwahu Tafo, Akroso, Nkawkaw Novotex, Begoro, Ofoase, and surrounding communities. The afternoon window from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm impacted Kowf Hotel, starting Point, Spredigle, the ECG District Office, Regional Hospital, Anlo Town, KTU, Kade, Kusi, Akim Tafo Township, Abirem, Asesewa, and many others. The evening window from 6:00 pm to midnight affected the same areas as the morning curtailment.
In the Accra East Region, three curtailment windows were announced. The first, from midnight to 6:00 am, affected Adenta, La Nkwantanan, Ayi Mensah, Oyarifa, Teshie, Spintex Road, Aburi, Ashongman, Osu, Cantonments, and surrounding areas. The morning window from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm impacted the same list. The afternoon window from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm affected parts of Airport Residential Area, Atomic Commission, James Town, Dome, Teshie Maami, Labone, Achimota, Nima, Adjiringanor, Teiman, and surrounding communities. The evening window from 6:00 pm to midnight affected Amrahia, Danfa, Otinibi, Madina Estate, Legon Hills, Adenta Estates, New Legon, Osu Oxford Street, parts of East Legon, Kwabenya, Legon, Burma Camp, Ashongman Estate, and many others.
The Accra West Region experienced curtailments in two windows. The afternoon window from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm affected Adabraka, Mallam Abease, McCarthy Hill, Gbawe, parts of James Town, Bubiashie, Pokuase Township, Chorkor, Korle Gonno, Mile 7, Tesano, parts of Alajo, South Industrial, Katamanto Market, Ofankor, Awoshie Baah yard, and surrounding areas. The evening window from 6:00 pm to midnight impacted Abossey Okai, Zongo Junction, Kaneshie Orange Market, Lartebiokorshie, Mamprobi, Odorkor, Kwashieman, Darkuman, Dansoman, Weija Dam Site, Tuba, Kokrobitey, Anyaa, Sowutuom, and surrounding communities.
The Volta and Oti Regions also experienced two curtailment windows. The early morning window from 12:00 am to 6:00 am and the morning window from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm both affected Oklahoma, Lolobi Towns, Likpe Towns, Sogakope township, Dabala Town, Akatsi Township, Keta, Kadjebi, Jasikan, Nkwanta, part of Ho Township, Aflao Lowcost, Denu Lowcost, Tsito Township, and surrounding areas.
In a separate development, GRIDCo also undertook emergency maintenance works at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point in the Ashanti Region from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, affecting Chirano, Nambro, Subri, Bibiani, Mensin Gold mining company, Nyinahin, and surrounding areas.
The ECG has assured affected customers that engineers are working to rectify the fault and that power supply will be restored immediately once the generation profile improves. The company deeply regretted the inconvenience caused to all affected customers across the country.
