The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to install 300 new distribution transformers to stabilise power supply and bring relief to residents in the Ashanti Region, the acting Managing Director, Julius Kwame Kpekpena, has said.
“To tell you the truth, we are aware of the challenges relating to power supply in the region, including intermittent power outages and low voltage. We are working on it to serve the residents better,” he stressed.
He said ECG would replace damaged transformers that had not been replaced, resulting in the transfer of customers on such transformers to nearby transformers to improve power supply to the people.
Courtesy call
He made the remarks when he led some management members to pay a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, last Thursday. The visit formed part of a facility tour of the region to inspect the company’s installations and some ongoing projects.
Some of the interventions being done will be completed within three months, others will be done in six months, while others will also be completed in a year.
He inspected work on the Anwomaso-Boadi-Kaase sub transmission line, rehabilitation of the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) and another line from the Adoato substation near Neoplan through Barekese to Offinso, among others.
Other ongoing projects include the upgrade of one GRIDCo transformer at Ridge BSP, with a 145MVA transformer, the construction of substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu and the construction of a sub-transmission line from Adoato to Barekese to improve supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, and Mowire, including support to the Barekese water treatment plant.
The rest are the construction of a sub-transmission line from Anwomaso to Airport Substation to enhance supply to the airport, Suame Magazine, and Greater Kumasi, the construction of a sub-transmission line from Fawoade to Agona, the upgrading of the Ridge Bulk Supply Point and the completion of substations at Afari and Sewuah hospitals.
Capacity constraints
He stated that some of the power issues within the region were due to capacity constraints at some substations and feeders that linked the substations to supply power to the residents, emphasising that a number of projects were being carried out, with some expected to be completed within three months.
He disclosed that by May ending, a new transformer would be installed at the Ridge BSP, adding that once it was done, there would be stability in Kumasi and other adjoining areas in terms of power supply.
He noted that the company had put priority on work at Barekese as it would enhance the water treatment plant to have stable power to produce adequate gallons of water for onward distribution to the residents.
For his part, Dr Amoakohene commended ECG for the urgent steps being taken towards improving power supply to the residents in the region for the benefit of millions of residents.
“It is relieving to hear that you are taking immediate steps now to improve power supply.
Also, we are glad to hear of the resumption of work on key projects aimed at ensuring power stability,” he said.
