The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has urged Ghanaian nationals to avoid Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD) following a major protest over unemployment and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals.
The protest, organised by the group “March and March”, is currently underway in the Johannesburg CBD today, Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
It has already led to major traffic disruptions and interruptions to normal business activities in the area, the High Commission said in a statement.
“Given the nature of the protest, there is a heightened risk of tension, particularly toward foreign nationals,” the Commission warned.
Ghanaians have been advised to exercise caution throughout the day and to avoid the Johannesburg CBD unless travel there is absolutely necessary.
Those who live in Johannesburg have been urged to remain indoors or in secure locations and to limit unnecessary movement.
The High Commission further cautioned community members not to engage with protesters under any circumstances, even if approached or provoked, and to prioritise their personal safety at all times.
It stressed the importance of carrying valid identification and relevant documentation.
“Please stay in close communication with members of our community and check in on individuals who may be particularly vulnerable,” the statement added.
Parents and guardians have also been asked to ensure that children remain in safe environments and avoid travel through affected areas.
The Commission urged the public to share only verified information and called for calm and vigilance.
“The priority at all times is the safety and well-being of every member of our community,” it said.
