Asante Akyem Agogo to Hold One-Week Rites of Late Ruler in June

The Asante Akyem Agogo Traditional Council has set June 4, 2026, to hold one-week traditional observation rites for the late Paramount Chief, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong.

The rites will be held at the Agogo Palace in the Asante Akyem area.

Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, Occupant of the Ofori Krobon Stool, died after reigning for 51 years.

The Traditional Council, together with the Queen and the Etia Aduana Royal Family, formally announced the passing of the chief in a statement issued this week.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Agogo Traditional Council, the Queen Mother and the Etia Aduana Royal Family formally announce the passing of Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, Omanhene of Agogo, Asante Akyem,” the statement said.

The public has been invited to join in honouring his memory and to perform the customary rites befitting his stature at the one-week observation.

In accordance with Asante tradition and custom, the Queen of Agogo, Nana Serwaa Afrakoma Kusi Oboadum, together with the Agogo Traditional Council, formally conveyed the news of his passing to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace on March 26, 2026.

The late chief was described as a revered leader whose stewardship strengthened the traditional identity and values of Agogoman while embracing modern pathways for growth and enhancing the development of Asante customs.

“His reign marked an unwavering dedication, wisdom, and dignity and stood as a symbol of unity,” the Council noted.

Commiseration
In its statement, the Council eulogised him as a towering figure in Ghana’s history, an embodiment of the highest ideals of leadership, integrity, and patriotism.

“He was a champion for national unity, democratic development and economic reform for his community.”

The Council extended its deepest condolences to his wife of 65 years, Mrs Ellen Adwoa Ampofoa Sarpong, his 15 children, his family, friends, associates, and the people of Asante Akyem Agogoman.

“It is the Council’s prayer that the Almighty God grants him eternal rest and comfort to those he leaves behind,” the statement added.

Profile
Beyond his traditional role, Nana Akuoko Sarpong was a prominent national figure.

He served as Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North with the Popular Front Party from 1979 to 1981.

He later served under the PNDC and NDC governments as Minister of Health, Minister of the Interior, Presidential Staffer for Chieftaincy Affairs, and Chairman of the Commission on Culture.

He was also a member of the Council of State, a respected legal practitioner and a firm advocate for education.
