The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched its maiden Ambassadors’ Chat Series, featuring centenarian diplomat Richard Maximillian Akwei, one of Ghana’s ten pioneering Foreign Service Officers.

The event was held on Monday, April 28, 2026.

Ambassador Akwei, 100, was among the first generation of Ghanaian diplomats who helped shape the nation’s foreign policy after independence, at a time when Ghana’s voice was just emerging on the world stage.

The Ambassadors’ Chat Series is designed as an informal platform for serving officers of the Ministry to interact with experienced retired ambassadors.

The aim is to enhance professional development by sharing practical diplomatic experiences.

During the session, Ambassador Akwei reflected on Ghana’s positions in international relations since independence.

He highlighted the country’s role in Africa’s liberation movements, the establishment of the former Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union, and the Non-Aligned Movement.

He described working closely with Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as inspiring.

In addition to recounting experiences from his active service, Ambassador Akwei shared views on current global developments, their impact on countries, and the expectations placed on international organisations.

He commended the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the management of the Ministry for the initiative.

Ambassador Akwei also applauded Mr Ablakwa for his exemplary leadership and relentless efforts in advancing Ghana’s foreign policy.
