The Tema Regional General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Emmanuel Ankomah, has revealed that the company lost eight transformers to theft and vandalism within a six-month period.
He said five transformers were stolen in the last quarter of 2025, while three more were taken in the first quarter of 2026.
Mr Ankomah explained that replacing a single 200 kVA transformer costs about GH¢200,000, adding that the losses have placed a heavy financial burden on the company and disrupted its operations and revenue generation.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and ensure that anyone working on transformers in their communities is properly authorised by the ECG.
According to him, the thieves usually target valuable components such as copper coils, aluminium windings and laminated steel cores, noting that removing these parts requires technical knowledge.
Mr Ankomah said all incidents have been reported to the security services, while public education efforts have been stepped up through district assemblies and community announcements to help curb the situation.
He added that the ECG has established fault centres to respond quickly to outages and maintain stable electricity supply.
Mr Ankomah warned that delays in restoring power often push consumers to seek alternative sources, which further affects the company’s service delivery.
He stressed that transformer vandalism remains a major threat to the ECG’s revenue and its ability to provide reliable electricity to customers.
