The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned Ghanaian nationals in Ethiopia that overstaying their authorised period will attract steep immigration penalties, including fines of up to $5,000 and possible confiscation of property.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry said the penalties are being enforced by the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS) under the country’s Council of Ministers Immigration Amendment Regulation No. 559/2024, issued in October 2024.
Under the revised regulation, travellers who overstay in Ethiopia by less than three years will pay a one-time fine of $3,000, plus a daily surcharge of $30 for each day overstayed.
Those who overstay beyond three years face a one-time fine of $5,000, in addition to the $30 daily surcharge.
The regulation further states that if a traveller is unable or unwilling to pay, Ethiopian authorities may confiscate and sell the traveller’s properties or belongings to recover the costs.
The Ministry urged Ghanaian nationals to strictly comply with Ethiopia’s immigration laws and ensure they do not exceed their authorised period of stay.
Ghanaians in Ethiopia have been advised to contact the Embassy of Ghana in Addis Ababa for consular assistance via email at addisababac@mfa.gov.gh or by phone at +251 11 371 1402.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and interest of Ghanaian nationals,” the statement said.
