Ghana’s growing reputation for using sport as a platform for diplomacy was on display as the 2026 President Putter Golf Championship concluded at the Celebrity Golf Club, with Catherine Fabbi and Anthony Tang emerging as overall winners in the ladies’ and men’s divisions.

The four-day tournament, themed around the Ghana–China Friendship Treaty, formed part of activities commemorating 65 years of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China. It attracted 206 golfers, including professionals, amateurs, seniors and rising talents, with participation from both local and Chinese players adding an international dimension to the competition.

Fabbi, who also serves as Lady Coordinator of the Ghana Golf Association, delivered a composed performance to top the ladies’ Group A category, finishing ahead of Letitia Amponsah-Mensah and Princess Nkansah-Boadu. Her victory capped a strong showing across the women’s field, where Joelyn Emefa Nyarko impressed to claim the Group B title.

In the men’s competition, Tang dominated the Group A amateur division, securing the top spot ahead of John K. Gaba and Shi-Jin Xing, while Xie Ping led the Group C category. The seniors’ events also produced competitive finishes, with Samuel Osei-Bediako winning the men’s division and Esther Antwi maintaining her consistency to take the women’s honours.

The professional segment saw Manassah Augustine claim the top prize of GH¢30,000 in the men’s regular category, edging Vincent Torgah, while Emos Klobah triumphed in the seniors’ professional division. Adjeley Jajah emerged victorious in the women’s professional category, ahead of Jessica Tei.

Organisers noted that despite challenging weather conditions, the event maintained a high level of competition and organisation, reinforcing its status as one of Ghana’s premier golfing tournaments. However, results for the scratch category could not be finalised due to time constraints.

The championship, sponsored by Giti Tyres and Tang Palace Hotel, also served as a platform for strengthening bilateral relations through sport. Officials highlighted the significance of the strong Chinese participation in deepening ties between the two countries.

General Manager of Giti Ghana, Wang Shu, expressed satisfaction with the outcome and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sports development, while the President of the Celebrity Golf Club, Tang Hong, and Club Captain Alex Oppong Baffoe commended the level of participation and organisation.

Chairman of the Ghana–China Friendship Association and former ambassador, Anani Demuyakor, emphasised the role of sporting exchanges in fostering cooperation and mutual understanding, urging sustained collaboration between Ghanaian and Chinese communities.

The President Putter Golf Championship continues to blend competitive sport with diplomatic engagement, providing a platform that not only rewards excellence on the course but also strengthens international partnerships.
