The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has climaxed a week-long celebration of International Firefighters’ Day with a call for public support and an end to attacks on fire personnel and equipment.
In a statement to mark the occasion, the Service commended firefighters nationwide for their “valour, commitment, compassion, and sacrifices” in saving lives and protecting property, often under dangerous conditions.
“Firefighters continue to risk their lives daily to protect people, property, and the environment. Their courage should inspire all of us to remain professional, disciplined, and committed, even in the face of danger,” the statement said.
Warning Against Attacks
The Service strongly condemned assaults on firefighters and the destruction of fire engines, describing such acts as unlawful and a direct threat to public safety.
“Attacking firefighters or damaging fire engines is unlawful and puts lives at risk. When firefighters are attacked, it delays emergency response and can lead to loss of lives and property,” the GNFS warned.
The public was urged to respect emergency responders, allow them to do their job, and protect firefighting equipment.
The GNFS appealed for greater public cooperation, encouraging citizens to follow basic fire safety measures and report fires early.
“Early calls to the Fire Service help us respond quickly and save more lives and property,” the statement added.
This year’s International Firefighters’ Day is being observed under the theme: “An attack on Firefighters and Equipment is an attack on public safety; End assaults and protect the firefighter.”
“Firefighters are your partners in development and safety. Work with us,” the GNFS said, adding: “Let us commit to protecting those who protect us.”
Tribute to Fallen Heroes
The GNFS also paid tribute to officers who died in the line of duty, stating that their “sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
The Service further pledged its commitment to the full recovery of firefighters injured during operations.
