President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the Krobo Divisional Police Headquarters at Odumase-Krobo in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.
He said his administration would continue to prioritise investment in the security sector, particularly the Ghana Police Service, as a frontline institution in maintaining law and order in local communities.
“Without peace and stability, there can be no meaningful progress, no thriving businesses, no quality education and no sustainable livelihoods,” President Mahama emphasised.
He said when his administration took over, it placed an order for 40 armoured vehicles for the service, which had played a big role in countering armed robbery across Ghana.
He said it was important for the service to build a modern, professional, and people-centred institution that was equipped not only to respond to crime but to prevent it through intelligence, innovation and strengthen community partnerships.
“This facility we are inaugurating today represents this vision in action. It reflects a deliberate policy direction, one that seeks to decentralise policing, bringing law enforcement closer to the people and enhancing operational readiness of our officers across the country,” the President stated.
He further explained that the Krobo Divisional Headquarters would serve as a strategic hub of intelligence gathering, crime prevention and rapid response.
Additionally, he said it would strengthen coordination within the Eastern Region and improve the overall effectiveness of policing in Krobo and beyond.
Commendation
The President commended the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Police Management Board and the leadership team for their dedication to transforming the police service.
He said the inauguration was to honour the first IGP from Krobo, ERT Madjitey, who distinguished himself with excellence, discipline and visionary leadership.
The President urged the chiefs and people to cooperate with the police who would be working in the facility, adding, “Security is a shared responsibility, and the effectiveness of this facility will depend not only on the police officers’ work, but the entire Krobo community’s cooperation, and timely information to the police will enhance their work and the Krobo community in general”.
Strategic intervention
The IGP, Mr Yohuno, said that a simple statistical analysis showed that with a population of approximately 314,859 people in the Krobo jurisdiction with only 260 police personnel, the gap was evident.
That, he said, translated to a police-to-civilian ratio of about 1:1,211, which fell significantly short of the United Nations recommended standards of 1:500.
Therefore, he said there was an urgent need for strategic interventions, including increasing personnel and expanding infrastructure to meet the growing demands of policing.
For his part, the Konor, Nene Sakite II, said the project was one of the many interventions the current administration had implemented to transform their communities and safeguard the nation.
