Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) are set to embark on an industrial strike on May 13, 2026, over delays in the implementation of migration reports that affect their conditions of service.
The action was announced by the Public Services Workers’ Union in a letter dated May 6, 2026, addressed to the Executive Secretaries of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the NIA.
According to the union, the decision follows prolonged delays in implementing the staff migration process, despite the approval of the Scheme of Service in July 2024 and the commencement of the migration exercise in December 2024.
It said the situation has resulted in staff being denied proper job placement, appropriate salary adjustments, and long-overdue promotions.
“Twenty-two months since the approval of the Scheme of Service, and despite the completion of the process and submission of reports, follow-ups by both the Union and Management, the Ministry of Finance is yet to grant approval for payment of staff,” the union stated.
The union added that it has engaged management and other relevant stakeholders over time in an effort to resolve the issue, but said the interventions have not yielded the expected results.
It further warned that the continued delays were threatening the “relatively peaceful industrial atmosphere” within the Authority.
While acknowledging assurances from management that efforts were ongoing to secure approvals, the union said workers had resolved through their decision-making structures to proceed with the industrial action.
The statement concluded that unless approval is granted for the implementation of the migration reports for staff before May 13, 2026, workers would go ahead with the planned strike action.
