Garden City University College (GCUC) has officially introduced its new Vice Chancellor, Eric Kwesi Ofori, to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, ahead of his investiture on July 9, 2026.
Presenting the new VC and the Governing Board at the Manhyia Palace on May 8, 2026, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, the Council Chair, said the visit was to formally introduce the leadership and seek the Asantehene’s blessings.
The delegation also extended birthday wishes to Otumfuo on his 76th birthday and acknowledged his role in the establishment of the university.
“Otumfuo turned 76 years old a few days ago, and we are aware of his remarkable works since ascending the Golden Stool. He played a key role in the establishment of the Garden City University, so we had to come and wish him well and pray for long life and strength so he continues his good works.”
Prof Owusu-Dabo used the occasion to update Otumfuo on the university’s progress as it marks 25 years since its founding.
“The university is 25 years. We are chartered now with your assistance, and we have a lot of projects in the pipeline. We came to report on what we are doing and get his blessings.”
Teaching Hospital
He announced plans by the institution to build a teaching hospital to train students.
He disclosed that the 100-bed teaching hospital, when completed, would be used to train doctors and physician assistants.
Nurse Practitioner
On employment challenges facing trained nurses, he said the university was working on a solution with the introduction of a course named Nurse Practitioner.
“Our current challenge is that after training our nurses, they remain home until the government gives clearance for their employment, and by which time they may have forgotten what they have learnt. To solve this, we intend to introduce what we call the Nurse Practitioner, so that they move from home to home to offer medical services to our mothers, fathers, and children.”
He said engagements with the Ghana Tertiary Accreditation Commission (GTEC) were ongoing to secure an accreditation for the course.
Renewed Dedication
Responding, Otumfuo commended the university for its contribution to national development and expressed confidence in its staff and the future prospects of the institution.
“The university has trained many people who are serving the country. Continue to dedicate yourselves,” he said.
Addressing the new VC directly, he urged him to build on the institution’s gains.
“As you come as a VC, add your efforts to improve the institution. We will continue to follow developments from the school. I will visit the institution. It’s been a while since I came there.”
